This book was written in the 1960's and is set in the 1930's, but the humor and themes are enduring. It is built around a family of four children, with a harried single mother. The children find a coin that grants them half a wish. For example, when the brother wishes his friends were with him, they are transported exactly halfway, leaving the friends stranded and confused.
We did this one on audiobook - the version that is performed by Words Take Wing Repertory Company. They have children performing the children's parts, which adds to the experience. The half grants of magic are funny, but the kids' realistic relationship with each other was the highlight of this book for me.
The audiotape charms, but without it, Boy Reader couldn't get connected to the book enough to finish it.
